Josephine Shoener Obituary

Josephine “Josie” Shoener, 71, of Mt. Carbon, passed away at home on Thursday, December 30, with her 2 daughters at her side.

Born in Pottsville, she was a daughter of the late Aloysius and Anna Matleska Close.

Josie was brought up in Heckchersville and Duncott and was a 1968 graduate of Minersville Area High School. Later, Josie became a rural route mail carrier for the Pottsville Post Office. She was well liked and considered an excellent mail lady by many people along her mail route, many remaining her friends after her retirement in 2005, and for the rest of her life.

One of the most important things to Josie was her Christian faith. She was one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and enjoyed attending meetings at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Pottsville with her many dear friends. She loved her God Jehovah, and she enjoyed sharing the beautiful hope from the Bible with everyone she met. During the pandemic, she enjoyed attending zoom meetings with her congregation at her daughter Jackie’s home along with her son-in-law John and her cherished grandson Jonathon.

Josie also loved animals. Her horses and cats were her favorites. She enjoyed taking care of her horses with her grandson Jonathon. Often they would enjoy a lunchbreak at the Freeze and Sheetz near Orwigsburg. Fries, mac and cheese and chocolate  milkshakes were Josie’s favorites. Josie also enjoyed going to her favorite Italion restaurant, Two Kings, in Hometown, with her family especially her 2 daughters Danielle and Jackie.

She is survived by her 2 daughters, Danielle Kleman and her companion Scott of Kaska and Jacqueline Kanger and her husband John, and Josie’s beloved grandson Jonathan of Barnesville; 3 sisters, Marie McDonald of  Schuylkill Haven, Annette Dawson of New York and Margo Close of South Carolina, along with many nieces and nephews.
